Arte Civico Circle

Arte Civico Circle addresses Civic Art (architecture, monuments, infrastructure) using civic action (community gatherings, public presentations and working for institutional change). The group’s central focus has been engaging in a year and a half long process to move a confederate monument out of public space.

The group’s Race and Racism in the Valley forum, produced in collaboration with Frontera Progressives, provided residents of Brownsville with the opportunity to learn more about how the history of racism in the Rio Grande Valley impacts the current built environment. The event included lectures from Debbie Nathan, Christopher Carmona and Stephanie Alvarez. The event culminated in 50 people casting votes and having small group discussions on the future of Texas’ Southernmost Confederate monument, currently located in a public park in Brownsville, Texas.
